TikTok stopped being just an app of dances and teenagers a long time ago. Its audience now runs well beyond Gen Z, TikTok Shop has been operating in a growing number of markets, and for many brands it has become an important sales channel. But that does not mean it is for everyone.
The right question is not whether you should be on TikTok, it is whether it is worth it for your ecommerce, with your product, your customer and your capacity to produce content.
What makes TikTok Ads different
It is worth understanding how advertising on TikTok works, because it is not like the other social ad channels. On Meta or Pinterest, a well-produced ad that looks like an ad works without a problem. On TikTok it is the opposite. People come to be entertained, not to be sold to, so content that looks like advertising gets scrolled past. What works is the video that fits naturally in among what they were already watching for pleasure, and that often does not even look like an ad.
When TikTok Ads is worth it
There are several signals that TikTok fits your brand. The more you meet, the more sense it makes:
- Your product sells on sight. If it can be demonstrated, show a before and after, or trigger an "I want that" on video, TikTok amplifies it. Beauty, fashion, gadgets, home and food work especially well.
- Your customer is already there. TikTok's audience has widened well beyond Gen Z and now comfortably reaches the 25 to 45 bracket. Your customer is almost certainly inside.
- You can produce video consistently. This is the decisive signal. TikTok rewards volume and variety of native content, so you need a continuous flow of your own videos or creators' (UGC).
- You sell on impulse or with an accessible ticket. The format favours impulse buying, though with good content it also works for higher-consideration products.
- You lean on creators. In several markets the affiliate and creator ecosystem is the engine of the channel, so if your product fits with a creator showing it off, the ceiling is higher.
When it is not worth it
There are also clear signals that it is better to wait, or that it is not your channel:
- You cannot feed it with content. It is the number one reason brands fail on TikTok. If you have no way to produce native video, neither in-house nor with creators, the investment burns with no return.
- Your product is very niche, technical or pure B2B. If your customer does not consume this kind of content, or your sale requires a long, rational explanation, the fit is worse.
- Your margins leave no room to test. TikTok demands a testing phase with several pieces of content before you land on what works. Without margin for that initial investment, it is risky.
- You expect to replicate your Meta ads as they are. The polished creative that performs on Meta usually works poorly, or even badly, on TikTok. If you are not willing to create native content, it is not your channel.
- You want to judge it on last click alone. TikTok generates demand that often closes on other channels. If you measure it only by last-click direct sales, it will look worse than it is and you will switch it off too soon.
TikTok Shop and affiliates: the market factor
There is an extra reason for an ecommerce to look at TikTok closely, and that is TikTok Shop. Spain is a useful example of how far this can go: TikTok Shop has been operating there since late 2024, it was one of the first European Union countries to have it, and it already passes 21,000 active sellers.
The most relevant part is how selling works there. Spain is the most affiliate-dependent market in all of Europe, with 87% of the sales volume of the top stores going through creators, well above Italy's 53%.
In a market like that, TikTok is not just a place to put ads, it is an ecosystem where creators show off your product and the sale closes inside the app, with formats like LIVE Shopping and paid campaigns such as GMV Max. If you sell into a market where TikTok Shop and the creator ecosystem are this developed, the channel's potential multiplies against using ads alone.
How to measure whether it is working for you
Here is the mistake we come across most. Since TikTok generates demand that closes on other channels (a search for your brand on Google, a direct visit, a retargeting hit on Meta), measuring it only by the platform's last-click ROAS almost always undervalues it. You end up switching TikTok off because "it does not convert", when it was actually feeding sales that other channels were claiming.
To evaluate it properly, look at the incremental effect (what happens to your total sales and to searches for your brand when you switch TikTok Ads on), cross-check against blended ROAS (total revenue divided by total spend) and, above all, measure in POAS, the real profit, rather than the platform's isolated ROAS.
So, is it worth it for your ecommerce?
To sum up, TikTok Ads is worth it if your product sells well in a video, your customer is on the platform and you can feed it native content consistently. Better still if you lean on creators and on TikTok Shop. In that case, it is one of the channels with the most room to grow right now.
It is not worth it yet if you have no way to produce that content, or if you are going to judge it by the same yardstick as Meta or Google. And note the most important detail: the factor that decides is not the budget, it is your capacity to create content. That is TikTok's real barrier to entry, and also its biggest opportunity for whoever crosses it.
Frequently asked questions
Does TikTok Ads work for ecommerce? Yes, above all if your product is visual and you can feed it with content. With a large monthly audience and TikTok Shop operating in a growing number of markets, it is a real channel, not an experiment. The fit depends on your product and your capacity to create video.
What products work best on TikTok? The ones that sell on sight and are demonstrated on video, such as beauty, fashion, gadgets, home and food. Very technical, niche or B2B products fit worse, because their purchase is more rational and less impulsive.
Is TikTok only for a young audience? Not any more. The audience has widened well beyond Gen Z and now comfortably reaches the 25 to 45 bracket. For most ecommerce, the target customer is inside the platform.
Do I need TikTok Shop to advertise on TikTok? It is not compulsory, but in markets with a strong creator ecosystem it adds a lot. Where affiliates drive the channel, TikTok Shop and the creator ecosystem multiply its potential against using ads alone.
Can I use my Meta ads on TikTok? Better not as they are. What works on TikTok is native content that looks like one more video in the feed, not Meta's polished creative. Replicating the ads without adapting them to the platform's language usually fails.
How do I measure whether TikTok is being profitable for me? Not on last click alone, which undervalues its effect. Look at the incremental on your total sales, searches for your brand, the blended ROAS, and measure in POAS. TikTok generates demand that often closes on other channels.
