Since the update on 9 October 2026, the app automatically translates up to eight languages on top of the store’s primary one, where until now the limit quoted in almost all the documentation was two.

The update comes with Auto-sync, a weekly synchronisation that keeps automatic translations current without you having to run them again by hand. Spain is among the countries with access to the expansion, which Shopify applies based on the store’s location. We checked it in a real store’s admin.

Since a lot of outdated information still talks about only two languages, in this guide we cover what Shopify supports natively today, what Translate & Adapt translates and what it does not, how to add and publish a language step by step, the limitations worth knowing, and when a paid app is actually worth it.

How many languages Shopify supports natively

Here you need to separate two things that often get mixed up, the languages you can publish in your store and the languages Shopify translates for you automatically.

The number of languages you can have published depends on your plan and on your markets setup. On the higher plans you can reach around twenty published languages, while the entry plans allow fewer. Publishing a language means customers in that market already see it in the store, with its language selector and its translated content.

Automatic translation is a different thing. Of the languages you publish, Translate & Adapt automatically translates up to eight on top of the primary one. You can still have the rest published, but you would need to translate them by hand or with a paid app. For most brands selling across Europe, eight automatic languages comfortably cover the markets they will actually reach.

Translate & Adapt: what it translates automatically and what it does not

Translate & Adapt is Shopify’s free, official app for translating the store. It installs at no cost and works on the content Shopify recognises as translatable. In practice it automatically translates most of what you sell, with a few important exceptions that are worth knowing before you start.

It automatically translates products with their descriptions, collections, blog posts and titles, pages, SEO metadata (meta titles and meta descriptions), the cookie banner, metaobjects and much of the theme content. It can also translate URL handles, which is the final part of the address of each product or page, although fixed segments such as /products/ or /collections/ stay in the store’s original language.

What it does not translate automatically are the legal policies (privacy, returns, shipping and terms), which you have to translate by hand, product tags and filtered collections, text that sits inside images, and content injected by third-party apps, unless that app uses Shopify’s translatable resources. For theme content, in some cases the app only fills in the translations that are missing rather than redoing them.

The table below sums up what falls under automatic translation and what you will need to handle by hand.

    Written by

Álvaro Díaz-Rato

Founder of STRAT · Growth Expert

I founded STRAT with one fixed idea: that ecommerce marketing should be measured in profit, not in metrics that look good in a report.
